Best Practices for Localization with Qt and Qt Quick on MeeGo

Session Summary:
MeeGo is a truly global platform and users expect applications developed for MeeGo to be properly localized and internationalized. Fortunately, MeeGo's use of the Qt toolkit makes localization much more painless than on many other platforms. This presentation will cover the best practices for localizing applications that are written for MeeGo using Qt, whether using C++ or QML-based Qt Quick. It will cover the basics as well as more advanced topics.
Session Abstract:

This presentation will discuss the localization and internationalization of applications on the MeeGo platform. It will start with some background on the scope and definition of common terms used.

It will cover the basics of how Qt addresses localization including ts and qm files and the Linguist tool. The relevant Qt classes for localization will be described.

The techniques for basic localization of UI strings will be described. Date, time, and currency localization will be covered. We'll look at how to localize images and multimedia files.

We'll show how to localize two simple MeeGo applications: a Qt application written in C++ and one written in QML using Qt Quick.

Some advanced topics such as dynamically changing languages will be covered.

Finally, some other tips and tricks on localization specific to MeeGo will be described.
