BoF: Mobile Web Browsers in MeeGo

Session Summary:
Browsing the World Wide Web is a key use-case for any MeeGo installation. Web engines provide mobile specific features to improve the end-user experience, allowing content providers to optimize their content for various device profiles. In this BoF session we would like to facilitate a discussion around mobile features as well as their implementation aspects in engines. This will be a great opportunity for browser developers to share knowledge for improving the mobile web experience in MeeGo, as well as discussing the different browser options. After all, nobody wants to reinvent the wheel!
Session Abstract:

This session is meant to be an open discussion about web browsing in MeeGo, with a focus on browser applications and engines. Suggested topics include:

  • Get an overview over existing browser solutions and their deployments.
  • Share experience in building mobile browsers.
  • Discuss implementation and impact of mobile features in engines.

What browser apps are people deploying on their MeeGo installations? What experience do you have with Chrome and/or Fennec? What could be done to improve the implementations.

Developing mobile browsers

What's your experience in optimizing engines like WebKit or Gecko for mobile usage? What can be done to trim down the library size? What "desktop" features are safe to exclude?

Mobile features in engines

There are many tricks to improve the mobile browsing experience, such as frame flattening or adjustments to the text rendering for improved readability on small displays. What features are most relevant for MeeGo profiles? How are they implemented?
