MeeGo Enterprise Goes Beyond Desktop
Compared with consumer devices, the enterprise client has a different focus and requirements, which are mainly on manageability and collaboration. Although mainly known to the public as a platform targeting consumer devices, MeeGo has received considerable efforts for making it a viable platform for corporate use. The motive behind these efforts is twofold: the first is that we want to eat our own dog food – all success companies strongly encourage using their own products in daily life – and MeeGo should be able to be used by MeeGo developers in a corporate environment for their daily work; second is that the enterprise mobile device market is too big to be ignored.
Since Yan Li delivered the presentation about MeeGo Enterprise Desktop at last year's MeeGo Conference, there has been a steady rise in interest from both inside and outside Intel. Currently there's an ongoing small-scale proof-of-concept deployment of MeeGo netbooks in Intel, evaluating the work needed for wider adoption. During this deployment, several major features have been developed in both MeeGo 1.1 and the upcoming 1.2 releases:
- Evolution’s new Exchange Web Service backend
- ConnMan’s Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) support
- Software update inside a corporate network (ZYpp’s libproxy support)
- VNC based remote IT support
- Enhancement on Chromium’s certificate handling and NTLM authentication
Beside those new features, we have not forgotten the design of enterprise features for future MeeGo releases, especially for handset and tablet. Now in this area, what's more interesting is the involvement of Intel IT staff, who intends to build “the right solution” for using MeeGo in the enterprise environment. Intel IT are experienced in designing mobile solutions in enterprise environment on many platforms, includes Android, BlackBerry, iOS and Symbian, and they felt the pain of enabling enterprise features on platforms that don't have the needed support built-in. Foreseeing the deployment of MeeGo tablets and handsets inside Intel, the IT staff want to use their experience to make MeeGo's enterprise features right from the beginning in the coming MeeGo release.
So we can say that there are numerous opportunities for MeeGo developers and software vendors to collaborate and help to shape the dream device for your mobile office. Welcome to try our latest MeeGo Enterprise Build during the session and join the discussion.
