MeeGo IVI - The latest Working Group Developments

Session Summary:
During MeeGo Conference 2010 in Dublin we gave an introduction into future increasingly service-oriented IVI systems and what challenges and consumer demands car manufacturers, so called OEMs, and their suppliers are facing. This session is a sequel outlining the progress the MeeGo IVI working group made towards delivering a software stack enabling next generation IVI systems. In addition to the state of MeeGo IVI presentation we will have panel discussion with Tsuguo Nobe, Chief Service Architect and Program Director Vehicle Information Technology at Nissan, Joel Hoffmann, Board Member of GENIVI, and Alistair Adams, Nokia Corporation, on latest trends in the automotive ecosystem.
Session Abstract:

MeeGo is a general purpose OS targeting mobile connected devices. The automotive industry traditionally embarked on an embedded design approach using dedicated, tightly integrated and specialized architectures with limited or no upgrade and customization ablity through the end user. The goal of MeeGo IVI is to deliver a middleware software stack on top of a general purpose OS enabling a flexible and extensible architecture that can keep up with the rapidly changing demands of today's and tomorrow's consumer demands by providing a rich and customizable user experience.

The MeeGo IVI Working Group has chosen areas of focus for upcoming releases:

  • Automotive Networking: Integrating current (CAN, MOST, LIN) and upcoming (AWD) automotive networking standards into a common architecture.
  • User Experience: Enabling multiple screens with different content for driver, passenger and rear-seat entertainment. Controlling access to shared components such as radio tuners, media players, etc.
  • Audio Management: Providing early-on audio feedback for vehicle data e.g. chimes, proximity sensors, etc. Managing multiple audio sources and sinks with policies.
  • CE Device Connectivity: Connecting and operating smartphones and other CE devices through a vehicle's IVI system.
  • Application Development for IVI: Implications and restrictions imposed by security, stability and safety requirements on enabling 3rd party applications for IVI systems.

During this session we will provide updates on how MeeGo IVI is planning to address these areas and the roadmap for future releases.
